Rebeca Romero's practice spans sculpture, textiles, writing, sound and performance. She creates objects, texts and installations that challenge the dominant historical narrative of the clash between Indigenous and European cultures. Often combining Pre-Columbian iconography with advanced scanning and printing technologies and materials ranging from clay to plastic, her works swing drastically between the past and an alternate future. Online museum archives become an excavation ground for the collection of data, that she later recontextualizes, reassembles and re-presents. With a focus on new materialities, processes of production and collaboration between artist and machine, her work proposes a further re-understanding of hegemonic notions of intelligence, technology and knowledge.

Romero received an MFA in Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College, University of London (2020), and she is a recipient of the Arts Council of England ‘Develop Your Creative Practice’ grant (2021).

Romero’s work has been exhibited at: FACT Liverpool (UK); V&A East, London (UK); South London Gallery, London (UK); ESCALA Collection (UK); Copperfield, London (UK); Palazzo Dandolo Parisi, Venice (IT); Corinium Museum, Cirencester (UK); Firstsite, Colchester (UK); Below Grand, New York (USA). She has been featured in the Phaidon publication Latin American Artists: From 1785 to Now (2023), and in Sun Dreams: Art Mirages in Latin America, published by Act Editora in 2024.

Romero has recently been awarded the OGR Prize 2023 for her work Semilla SAGRADA. The work has been acquired by Fondazione per l’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea CRT, remaining on loan to OGR Torino in its physical and digital versions. Other recent acquisitions include KADIST Collection, ESCALA Collection (The Essex Collection of Art from Latin America) (UK) and S. Davíðsdóttir (UK).
