Ella Littwitz: No Vestige of a Beginning, No Prospect of an End / 1 March - 29 April 2017
|
Copperfield Gallery is pleased to present the first UK solo exhibition of Ella Littwitz (b 1982 Haifa, Israel).
At first assessment the visitor will find an array of objects suggestive of a botanist’s study: casts of plants, landscape chalkboard drawings, organic looking models. Only her titles reveal by stealth the depth of Littwitz’s investigations: An intricate bronze cast of the Dittrichia Viscosa is titled The Act of Going Up, suggesting the growth of the plant while drawing on the Hebrew expression to 'move to Israel'. Through botanical research in her homeland, Littwitz has found that this Pioneer Species is "the first to colonise previously disrupted or damaged ecosystems". Due to its allelopathic character, it’s biochemical components prevent the germination and survival of other surrounding organisms. Taking these biological considerations in the context of Littwitz’s practice, a whole spectrum of political and cultural connotations become apparent, which are intrinsic in the construction of new cultural identities and territorial parameters around the world and throughout history. Littwitz is careful to present, not to comment. In this respect her work can be a trap for prejudice and default thinking. Click here to see the artist CV. |
